Being Homeschooled

Homeschooling is a great option for educating one's children when the school system isn't doing its job. I have utilized homeschooling myself. Usually only for a short time and then back into the public schools they go. Sometimes people will homeshool for their children for the entire education. I'm not saying it is good or bad, but it's nice to have the option. But then there's that question that comes when people are talking about someone with no social skills-- "Were they homeschooled?"

(I apologize in advance to anyone who might be offended by this post.)

  1. I'm just thinking what my mum would have been like if she homeschooled me! Or how different I'd have turned out to be if I'd had this option!! Hmm! Interesting!!!

    Take care

  2. I home-schooled my son for two years -- the horrible, middle-school years. He had terrible allergies, and the school he would have been attending was a moldy oldie. We had a great time, and he claims he learned more during those two years than he ever did in a public school. Still, he was totally ready to go back into the system for high school. One word: girls. ;)

He never lacked for socialization while we were home schooling, though. In fact, I think, as a rule, home-schooled children are exposed to a broader range of social situations. They tend to interact more with various age groups, as opposed to being warehoused with only their peers.

  3. Linda, same here with my youngest, homeschooled in Zth and part of 8th, then he was ready to return and did well. Personally I think those socially- backward kids would have been that way regardless as I have seen it both ways. I enjoyed the homeschooling experience with those of my kids who got it. So true that they learn more at home, even with my sometimes halfhearted attempts. If I had to do it again I would probably do more homeschooling, not less.

  4. Old Kitty, I would have loved it but my mom would have refused I am sure. She was a traditionalist and former teacher who felt kids needed to be taught in the classroom. It always bothered her when I pulled one of mine out to homeschool. And she was relieved when I sent them back after a year or so. But they all turned out well so there.

  5. My husband has this idea that all our children will be homeschooled. I suppose he will be right if we raise them in LA, but hopefully by then we will have moved to some area where the schools aren't full of guns.

  6. Jane, Actually it was when we lived in CA that I did most of the homeschooling. The schools there are awful, and we didn't even live in a bad area.
